Foot Amputation of Soldier
Sewing up the artery and veins of the stump

During the Civil War, there were thousands of amputations performed with chloroform or ether on soldiers from the north and south.

NO ONE BIT BULLETS, STICKS OR PIECES OF LEATHER.

Over 29,000 Union soldiers went under the knife without feeling any pain.

Total Gun Shot Wounds of Extremities: 174,206
Treated without any Operation 140,124 (about 80%)
Treated with amputation 29,426 (about 21%)
Treated with second amputation (a second round of amputation at a later date about .8%)

Here we are demonstrating to the public a foot and amputation. The soldier is feeling no pain from the effects of the chloroform. Upon removing, we will prepare the stump for a future false hand or foot to be used by this soldier. Opium in alcohol would be given as a pain killer after the operation.
